What is Goofus Glass?

Pressed glass which was then painted.  The colors used were typical and popular for the time, but seem pretty amazing now.  Paint on glass is not something with superior adhesion characteristics, so the biggest problem with goofus glass items is paint loss.  All the Ebay auctions will make mention of the condition of the paint.

These four pictures are taken of the same bowl and show the effect of different lighting conditions.  You can click on any picture to see a full size image.  This bowl is in good condition but you can see some of the paint loss on the pictures taken from the bottom.

Usually the decoration was applied to clear glass products, but there is also custard glass, milk glass, and opalescent glass that was given the goofus treatment.

Every once in a while a piece is presented which was attacked by someone who thinks glassware should be VERY clean.  "I think this was goofus glass, but someone has removed all the paint."

The definition is not always clear cut either.  If paint was applied to a specific type of glass such as custard or opalescent, it will sometimes be listed as Goofus.  In other words Goofus is as much a style of decoration as it is a type of glass.

To learn more about Goofus Glass

There seems to have been only a single book published which is devloted only to Goofus Glass.  This would be Goofus Glass, by Carolyn McKinley in 1984.  I believe it is now out of print and only available in the secondary market.  You should expect to pay at least $40 for it.  I have made sure the book is included in the Ebay and Amazon searches.

I believe there are also references to Goofus Glass in the various pattern glass encyclopedias, but I have not verified that myself.

The Ebay Marketplace

The Amazon Marketplace

Most people think of Amazon for books, but they keep crossing and actually have much more than that.  In particular, they support many individual sellers of a host of products in their Amazon Marketplace.

I find they sell so much stuff it is hard to find what you are looking for.  For example. As I was building this site, a search for "Goofus Glass" would return 106 hits.  In reality, only one of those is of any interest to the Goofus Glass collector.
